Dietary supplements

Dietary supplements: Hype or must? 2 valuable considerations.

Dietary supplements

Dietary supplements include such ingredients as vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and enzymes and other bioactive substances or its combination.

Each organism needs nutrients providing it with energy, the building blocks for repair and growth and substances necessary to regulate chemical processes in the organism. All of your body’s systems, organs, and cells need these essential nutrients.

There are seven main classes of nutrients that the body needs:

  1. carbohydrates,
  2. proteins,
  3. fats,
  4. vitamins,
  5. minerals,
  6. fibre and
  7. water.

To work properly your body needs also other substances such as probiotics or trace elements.

Varied diet

Nutrients are, in optimal case, a part of food we eat and drink, of our diet. It is important that everyone consumes these seven nutrients on a daily basis to help them build their bodies and maintain their health.

Eating foods from across all food groups is called varied diet. This ensures you acquire a broad-spectrum of the macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals your body needs to to stay healthy and work at the optimal level. Varied diet broadens the sources of the vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients that nurish your body. It not only supplies your body with essential nutrients but also make you feel better.

Futhermore, bacteria and microbes in your intestinal tract (microbiome) needs nourishment just like the rest of your body. It works alongside the cells in your small intestine to digest food and extract nutrients. Prebiotic (those with fiber) and probiotic foods in your diet (those containing good bacteria) help you maintain a beneficial microbial balance.

BUT. The idea that you can get all your nutrients and probiotics from food is fine in theory …

How much rich in nutrients today is our food actually?

There are several reasons why our varied diet my not be as rich in nutrients as we think. Actually, modern food more and more provide lower levels of necessary nutrients and there are nutrient gaps in all populations across the globe.

1. Unfortunately, real whole foods may not provide us with the same health benefits as they did for our ancestors

You should know most of today’s friuts & vegetables probably weren’t grown in soil bursting with essential vitamins and minerals. Instead, they were likely grown in over-farmed, micronutrient-depleted soil (for example, an apple pick today has 96% less iron, 48% less calcium, 84% less phosphorous and 82% less magnesium than an apple grown only 80 years ago).

You are also not eating your fruits&veggie moments after they were picked or at the peak of their ripeness. The foods in today’s stores were often picked prematurely and shipped from thousands of miles away, losing their vitamins and minerals every minute of every mile traveled.

The same applies to your protein-based foods. Most of it is not from a healthy, organic, pasture-raised bird with access to grass, bugs, dirt, and sunshine … Be almost sure it was from an animal raised in an over-crowded confined space with very little access to its natural environment, given a steady diet of GMO corn and soy…

The fact is, that eating varied, real whole food is a good start toward health, but it is not enough.

Supplements - proteins, fats, carbohydrates

2. Not everyone is great at buying and cooking the variety of foods a healthy diet requires. Not everyone has the time …

People, tend to buy ready-to-eat food or convenient snacks and prepackaged foods: starches, sugars, trans fats, and little fiber. All these foods does not contain the wide range of nutrients you can find in a diverse diet of whole foods.

Dietary supplements add missing nutrients to your diet
