HOW IMPORTANT IS L-TRYPTOPHAN FOR US?

L-Tryptophan is a precursor of several compounds. It is transformed in our body to serotonin and can from there be transformed in several steps to melatonin (a neuro-hormone).

Tryptophan is also used by our body to make niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin is important for the health of our skin and digestive and nervous systems. It is also known to increase the “good-type” or HDL cholesterol.

Serotonin is often called the “happy” hormone, although it actually plays three roles in our body. As a neurotransmitter serotonin transmits “messages” in our nervous system, but it also produces paracrine effects through cell-to-cell communication of nearby cells. Finally, in the bloodstream, it has hormonal effects. Acute tryptophan depletion studies in humans have shown that the resulting low serotonin function can lower mood in some people. In animal studies tryptophan deficiency resulted in reduced feeding, reduced growth and abnormal behavior. L-tryptophan is used in humans, alongside other medicine, to treat mental depression and bipolar disorder.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, especially when we are in dark surroundings.  The production decreases when we are exposed to light. Melatonin plays in important role in regulating our circadian rhythm (our natural 24-hour rhythm) and our sleep, but also in modifying stress levels, mood, immunity and aging. Melatonin has been shown to increase our sleep efficiency and sleep duration.

Summarizing L-tryptophan is used by our body to produce compounds that makes us happy (serotonin), ensure good sleep (melatonin) and increase our health (niacin – vitamin B3).

To get sufficient L-Tryptophan might be difficult, especially if it all has to come from non-animal sources. Examples of such foods that contain a lot of tryptophan are bananas, chocolate, oats, dates, almonds and spirulina.
